“You can know the name of a bird in all the languages of the world, but when you’re finished, you’ll know absolutely nothing whatever about the bird… So let’s look at the bird and see what it’s doing – that’s what counts. I learned very early the difference between knowing the name of something and knowing something.”

… Richard Feynman (1918 – 1988)

And that quote just beautifully sums up the difference between me and most of the “pattern” traders.

You may be able to recognise and name a pattern, but do you really know what is happening within the market? The pattern is just the footprints of the past. The future will depend on the way that trader sentiment and decision making drives future orderflow.

Are you really understanding price movement?

Or are you just assigning names to it? And then reacting in mechanical fashion to the name?

An excerpt from theYTC Price Action Trader:

A better way to trade is to understand the CAUSE of price movement.

Understanding CAUSE allows you to identify potential moves as or before they occur.

Understanding CAUSE allows you to enter a price move earlier.

Understanding CAUSE allows you to understand why a price move is occurring.

Understanding CAUSE allows you to assess when a move is likely to continue and when it’s likely to end.

Understanding EFFECT only, means that all you can do is react to what has already occurred, usually well after it has already occurred, and then simply hope that sufficient profit potential is still available in the move.

I’m asking you to take three steps!

STEP ONE:

Learn the real reasons that price moves – YTC Price Action Trader

STEP TWO:

Learn to see “inside” the price movement to gain a greater understanding of “how” price is moving from an orderflow perspective.

Learn to see changes in the internal properties of price movement – directionality, speed, acceleration, volatility, and overlap.

Learn to see signs of strength and weakness within the price movement.

STEP THREE:

Having learnt to assess the internal nature of price movement, you’ll be light years ahead of the majority of traders who can simply give you the name of a pattern and tell you where the text book says that price should go.

But I want you to go one step further.

Learn to see where the emotions of other traders will drive the changes to orderflow that provide opportunity in the market.

Learn to sense the fear of those that have created the price movement and trapped themselves in a losing position. Learn to understand how and when their exit orderflow will drive price… and how far market context should allow it to go before other traders will oppose the move. And in doing so… learn to profit from the demise of those who fail to understand the true nature of this trading game.

There’s a big difference between knowing the name of something and knowing something.

Most of the education we receive in trading is of the former category.

I’m asking you to take the much harder path.

Go above and beyond the mass of other traders.

Because in trading, we’re not really playing a game of price. We’re playing other players.

The consistent winners are those who know what game they’re playing and who know how to recognise and exploit the opportunity that becomes available when other traders fail.

It’s your choice which path you take.

  1. Hi Mr. Lance

When I was trading with fixed patterns, most of the time I didn’t understand the reason and meaning of my entry and I did it only because I was told to enter in this situation but I was never interested
It wasn’t until the concepts you shared gently put my mind on the right track that I should read a collection of market and price concepts and sentiments before entering.
At least now I have a reason for my trades even if I make a mistake because by reassess I can understand the reason for my mistake and even a better entry can be found.

“I have to thank you for these great changes”

    1. You’re very welcome Ari. This part of your comment is so important – “At least now I have a reason for my trades”. Underlying all our trades MUST be a reason WHY we expect it to work. WHY we expect price to reach the target. WHY the stop will invalidate the trade premise. Without this, we just cannot trust the trade.
